The prostate gland is an important part of the male sexual organs. It is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. The prostate gland's most important role is to secrete and then store a transparent fluid that is an important part of semen. A sound human prostate gland is a bit bigger than a walnut. It surrounds the urethra beneath the bladder. It is positioned in front of the rectum and a portion of it can be felt during a rectal evaluation.

Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is termed prostatitis. If the prostate grows enlarged it can hinder urine flow, making urination difficult and very painful and in severe cases completely impassable. Prostatitis can often be treated with antibiotics, prostate massage or even surgery.

In older-aged males, the prostate can enlarge to the point where urination is difficult. This is commonly known as bPH/benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with medicinal drugs or with surgical procedures that removes a component of the prostate. One common surgical procedure used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Prostatic cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers affecting elderly men and a leading cause of death. Regular rectal exams are medically recommended to discover prostate cancer early. There is also a lab blood test that measures the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is normally quite low. Elevated pSA blood results can suggest disorder in the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can cause a doctor to investigate further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or operations. It has only recently been uncovered that medications such as Docetaxel can be helpful in treating cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in males has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for medical value or just for sexual fulfillment.
