The prostate gland is a vital part of the male sex organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly called the prostrate gland. The prostate's principle job is to produce and then store a see-through liquid that is part of seminal fluid or semen. A normal human prostate gland is a bit heftier in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra beneath the urinary bladder. It is located in front of the rectal region and a portion of it can be felt during the normal course of a rectal exam or evaluation.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is called prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged too much it can stop up the urine stream, making urination very painful and more difficult and in very extreme instances entirely impassable. Prostatitis is commonly treated with antibiotic prescription drugs, massage of the prostate or surgical measures.

In men who are older, the prostate may grow to the point where urination becomes difficult. This is known as benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly called BPH. It can be treated with different types of medications or with even surgical procedures that removes a portion of the prostate. One very typical surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most frequent cancers that affects older-aged men and a leading cause of dying. Regular rectal exams are recommended to uncover prostate cancer before it spreads. There can be also a laboratory blood evaluation that will measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, quite low. Elevated pSA blood results could be an indicator of disorder in the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can lead a physician to investigate more closely. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even surgical procedures. It has recently been observed that medicines including Docetaxel may be effective in the treatment of prostate cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate in men is frequently compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for clinical value or strictly for sexual purposes.
