The prostate is a gland that is a component of the masculine sex organs. The prostate is mistakenly known as the prostrate. The prostate's predominant role is to secrete and store a see-through fluid that is a vital part of semen. A normal human prostate gland is somewhat bigger in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra below the bladder. It is situated in front of the rectal area and a portion of it can be felt while undergoing a rectal exam.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is named prostatitis. If the prostate grows too large it can block the urine stream, making urination very painful and difficult and in very extreme instances totally impassable. Prostatitis is commonly treated with antibiotic prescription drugs, prostate massage or even surgical procedures.

In elderly males, the prostate can enlarge to the point where urination is difficult. This is commonly known as benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly called BPH. It can be treated with prescription medications or with operations that removes a portion of the prostate. One common surgical procedure used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Prostatic cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers to affect older men and a major cause of deaths. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to discover prostate cancer early. There is also a lab blood test that measures the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which should normally be quite low. Elevated test results might signify disease inside the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be grounds for your physician to investigate further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even operations. It has only recently been found that medications such as Docetaxel can be helpful in the treatment of cancer.

Stimulating the prostate gland in males is frequently compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for clinical or strictly sexual purposes.
