The prostate gland is a vital component of the male sex organs. The prostate is mistakenly called the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate's chief function is to secrete and then store a see-through liquid that is a vital component of seminal fluid or semen. A non-diseased human's prostate is a little bit heftier in size than a shelled walnut. It surrounds the urethra beneath the urinary bladder. Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is termed prostatitis. In older-aged males, the prostate may grow to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is known as benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly termed BPH. One commonplace operation used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most frequent cancers that affects older males and a leading cause of death. Consistent rectal exams are medically recommended to find prostate cancer in the early stages. There can be also a blood test that measures the concentration of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which should normally be very low. Raised test results may suggest disorder in the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or prostate cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be a reason for a doctor to investigate more closely. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or surgery. It has just recently been discovered that drugs including Docetaxel may be helpful in treating cancer.
