The prostate is really a gland that is an important part of the sex organs of the male. It is mistakenly called the prostrate, rather than prostate. Its leading job is to first secrete and then store a transparent fluid that is part of seminal fluid (semen). A sound individual's prostate gland is slightly larger than a walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra just below the urinary bladder. It is situated in front of the rectal region and a portion of it can be felt during the rectal part of the exam.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate gets too enlarged it can occlude urine flow, making urination difficult and very painful and in very severe situations entirely impossible. Prostatitis can often be treated with antibiotic prescription medications, massage of the prostate or even operations.

In older-aged men, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is called benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. It can be treated with the use of medicinal drugs or with surgical measures that removes a component of the prostate. One very typical surgical procedure used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting elderly males and a leading cause of dying. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to pick up prostate cancer early. There is also a blood evaluation that can measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, quite low. Raised pSA blood results can highly suggest disease within the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or a cancerous prostate. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can lead your physician to investigate more thoroughly. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even operations. It has recently been noticed that medicines such as Docetaxel are useful in the treatment of a cancerous prostate.

Stimulation of the prostate in men has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for health-related or for strictly sexual fulfillment.
