The prostate is a gland that is a vital part of the masculine sex organs. The prostate is mistakenly known as the prostrate. The prostate gland's most important role is to first secrete and then store a see-through liquid that is a vital part of semen, or seminal fluid. A sound human's prostate is a bit heftier in size than a shelled walnut. It surrounds the urethra just below the bladder. It is positioned in front of the rectum and part of it can be felt during the normal course of a rectal examination.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is known as prostatitis. If the prostate grows enlarged it can stop up the urine stream, making urination painful and difficult and in very extreme instances entirely impassable. Prostatitis can often be treated with antibiotic medications, massage of the prostate or even surgical procedures.

In older men, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urination becomes difficult. This is known as benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. It can be treated with different types of medications or with surgical procedures that removes a portion of the prostate. One very typical operation used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Prostate cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers to strike older-aged males and a leading cause of deaths. Regular rectal exams are recommended to find prostate cancer before it spreads. There can be also a laboratory blood evaluation that can measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which should normally be very low. Raised bloodwork PSA results could suggest disorder in the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be grounds for a doctor to investigate with further tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgical procedures. It has just recently been observed that drugs including Docetaxel can be effective in treating prostate cancer.

Stimulating the prostate in males is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate either for clinical value or primarily for sexual purposes.
