The prostate gland is a vital component of the sex organs of the male. It is mistakenly called the prostrate gland. The prostate's paramount function is to secrete and then store a transparent fluid that is an important part of seminal fluid (semen). A normal human prostate gland is somewhat bigger in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra beneath the urinary bladder. It is also situated in front of the rectal area and a portion of it can be felt during the rectal exam.
Inflammation of the prostate is a gland that is named prostatitis. If the prostate becomes too enlarged it can stop the flow of urine, making urination difficult and painful and in severe cases totally impossible. Prostatitis can usually be treated with antibiotic drugs, prostate massage or surgical measures.
In men who are older, the prostate can grow to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is referred to as benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly termed BPH. It can be treated with different types of medicinal drugs or with even operations that removes a component of the prostate. One common operation used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).
Cancer of the prostate is one of the most common cancers that affects elderly men and a major cause of death. Consistent rectal exams are highly recommended to uncover prostate cancer early. There is also a lab blood test that measures the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, quite low. Elevated blood PSA results may highly suggest disease inside the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can lead your physician to investigate with additional tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgical procedures. It has recently been noted that medications like Docetaxel may be helpful in the treatment of cancer.
Stimulating the prostate gland in men has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for clinical or strictly sexual fulfillment.
