The prostate is a component of the masculine sexual organs. It is mistakenly called the prostrate. The prostate gland's predominant function is to produce and store a see-through fluid that is a component of semen. A healthy individual's prostate gland is slightly greater in size than a walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra below the urinary bladder. It is also positioned in front of the rectal region and part of it can be felt during the course of a rectal evaluation.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is termed prostatitis. If the prostate grows enlarged it can hinder the urine stream, making urination very painful and more difficult and in very severe situations wholly impossible. Prostatitis can be treated with antibiotics, prostate massage or surgery.

In older-aged males, the prostate may grow to the point where urinating is difficult. This is commonly known as bPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with the use of medication or with surgery that removes a component of the prostate. One very typical surgery used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Prostatic cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers that strikes older males and a leading cause of deaths. Consistent rectal exams are highly recommended to detect prostate cancer before it spreads. There can be also a laboratory blood test that will measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, quite low. Elevated test results might signify disease within the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or prostate cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can cause a physician to investigate more thoroughly. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or surgery. It has only recently been noted that medications including Docetaxel can sometimes be effective in the treatment of prostate cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in males is typically compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for medical value or primarily for sexual purposes.
