The prostate gland is an important part of the male sex organs. The prostate is mistakenly called the prostrate gland. The prostate's main job is to first produce and then store a transparent liquid that is a vital component of seminal fluid or semen. A sound man's prostate is a bit larger than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra beneath the bladder. It is also situated in front of the rectal area and a portion of it can be felt during the normal course of a rectal examination.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is called prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged too much it can impede the urine stream, making urination very painful and difficult and in severe instances totally impassable. Prostatitis is commonly treated with antibiotic prescription drugs, massage of the prostate or operations.

In elderly males, the prostate can enlarge to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It can be treated with different types of prescription medications or with operations that removes part of the prostate. One commonplace surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most frequent cancers affecting elderly males and a major cause of death. Regular rectal exams are recommended to pick up prostate cancer early. There is also also a blood test that measures the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which should normally be very low. Elevated bloodwork PSA results could be an indicator of disorder within the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be grounds for your doctor to investigate more. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or operations. It has recently been found that medicines such as Docetaxel are helpful in treating a cancerous prostate.
