The prostate is a component of the male sex organs. The prostate is mistakenly known as the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate's primary job is to secrete and store a transparent fluid that is a vital component of seminal fluid or semen. A non-diseased human prostate gland is a bit heftier in size than a shelled walnut. It surrounds the urethra just below the bladder. It is also situated in front of the rectal area and a portion of it can be felt during a rectal evaluation.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is termed prostatitis. If the prostate grows too large it can impede urine flow, making urination very painful and difficult and in very severe situations entirely impossible. Prostatitis is commonly treated with antibiotic prescription medications, prostate massage or even surgical procedures.

In men who are elderly, the prostate can enlarge to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is termed bPH/benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with different types of medications or with even surgery that removes a portion of the prostate. One very typical operation used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Prostate cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers that affects older-aged males and a leading cause of deaths. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to detect prostate cancer early. There is also also a blood evaluation that can measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, very low. Raised pSA blood results might signal disorder within the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or prostate cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be grounds for your physician to investigate with additional tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even surgical procedures. It has recently been noted that drugs like Docetaxel are effective in treating a cancerous prostate.

Stimulation of the prostate in males is frequently compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for medical value or primarily for sexual purposes.
