The prostate gland is a vital component of the masculine sexual organs. The prostate is mistakenly known as the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate gland's chief job is to first secrete and then store a transparent fluid that is part of seminal fluid or semen. A normal human prostate gland is slightly heftier in size than a walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra beneath the bladder. It is located in front of the rectum and a portion of it can be felt during the course of the rectal part of the exam.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is named prostatitis. If the prostate grows too enlarged it can block the urine stream, making urination difficult and very painful and in very extreme situations entirely impassable. Prostatitis is commonly treated with antibiotic prescription medications, prostate massage or surgical measures.

In men who are elderly, the prostate can grow to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is known as benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. It can be treated with different types of medications or with surgery that removes part of the prostate. One commonplace operation used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most frequent cancers that affects older-aged males and a leading cause of death. Consistent rectal exams are recommended to uncover prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also a blood test that can measure the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is normally very low. Raised test results can signify disorder inside the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can cause your doctor to investigate even further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgery. It has recently been observed that medicines such as Docetaxel may be helpful in the treatment of prostate cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in men is frequently compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate either for clinical value or strictly for sexual fulfillment.
