The prostate gland is part of the male sex organs. The prostate is mistakenly called the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate gland's most important function is to first produce and then store a transparent liquid that is part of seminal fluid. A normal individual's prostate gland is a little bit bigger in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra just below the urinary bladder. It is also positioned in front of the rectum and part of it can be felt during a rectal exam.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is known as prostatitis. If the prostate becomes too enlarged it can impede the flow of urine, making urination very painful and difficult and in severe situations entirely impossible. Prostatitis is commonly treated with antibiotics, massage of the prostate or even surgery.

In men who are older, the prostate may grow to the point where urination becomes difficult. This is called bPH/benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with different types of medication or with surgical procedures that removes part of the prostate. One commonplace surgery used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most common cancers to strike older-aged men and a major cause of deaths. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to pick up prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also a laboratory blood test that measures the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which can be normally very low. Raised blood PSA results can highly suggest disease within the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can cause a doctor to investigate more thoroughly. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even surgical measures. It has just recently been found that drugs including Docetaxel can be helpful in treating prostate cancer.

Stimulating the prostate gland in men is frequently compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate either for health-related or for strictly sexual purposes.
