The prostate is a gland that is an important part of the male sexual organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. Its principle role is to secrete and store a clear fluid that is a vital component of semen, or seminal fluid. A healthy human prostate is somewhat larger than a walnut. It surrounds the urethra beneath the bladder. It is located in front of the rectal area and part of it can be felt during the normal course of a rectal evaluation.
Inflammation in the prostate gland is called prostatitis. If the prostate grows too large it can stop up urine flow, making urination painful and difficult and in extreme instances wholly impassable. Prostatitis is treated with antibiotic prescription drugs, massage of the prostate or even operations.
In older-aged males, the prostate can grow to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is named benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It can be treated with the use of medicinal drugs or with operations that removes a portion of the prostate. One common surgery used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).
Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most commonplace cancers to affect older men and a leading cause of death. Regular rectal exams are recommended to uncover prostate cancer early. There is also also a laboratory blood evaluation that will measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which should normally be quite low. Raised test results might signal disease inside the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or a cancerous prostate. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can lead a physician to investigate more closely. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or surgical procedures. It has only recently been discovered that medications such as Docetaxel can sometimes be effective in the treatment of a cancerous prostate.
Stimulation of the prostate in males is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for clinical or strictly sexual fulfillment.
