The prostate is a component of the sex organs of the male. It is mistakenly called the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate's most significant job is to produce and store a see-through liquid that is a component of semen. A non-diseased human's prostate gland is slightly greater in size than a shelled walnut. Consistent rectal exams are medically recommended to discover prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also a lab blood test that can measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, very low. Elevated bloodwork PSA results could indicate a disorder in the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be grounds for your doctor to investigate with further tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even operations. It has recently been noticed that medicines like Docetaxel could be useful in the treatment of cancer.
