The prostate gland is a vital part of the masculine sex organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate. The prostate gland's most significant job is to produce and then store a transparent liquid that is an important part of semen (seminal fluid). A sound individual's prostate gland is somewhat bigger in size than a walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra underneath the bladder. It is positioned in front of the rectal area and part of it can be felt during a rectal evaluation.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is named prostatitis. If the prostate grows enlarged it can occlude the urine stream, making urination very painful and more difficult and in extreme cases entirely impassable. Prostatitis can be treated with antibiotic drugs, prostate massage or surgery.

In older men, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urinating is difficult. This is called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It can be treated with different types of medications or with even operations that removes part of the prostate. One commonplace surgical procedure used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most common cancers affecting older men and a major cause of death. Consistent rectal exams are recommended to find prostate cancer early. There can be also a blood evaluation that measures the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, quite low. Raised pSA blood results might suggest disorder within the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or prostate cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can be a reason for a physician to investigate even further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even surgery. It has recently been noted that drugs including Docetaxel are helpful in treating a cancerous prostate.

Stimulating the prostate in males is typically compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for clinical value or just for sexual fulfillment.
