The prostate is really a gland that is a component of the masculine sexual organs. The prostate is mistakenly known as the prostrate, rather than prostate. Its overriding role is to first secrete and then store a see-through liquid that is a vital component of seminal fluid (semen). A sound human's prostate is slightly bigger than a shelled walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra just below the bladder. It is situated in front of the rectal region and part of it can be felt during the normal course of a rectal exam.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate grows too enlarged it can stop up urine flow, making urination difficult and very painful and in severe situations completely impossible. In men who are older, the prostate can grow to the point where urination is difficult. This is referred to as benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly called BPH. It can be treated with different types of medicines or with even operations that removes part of the prostate. One common operation used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Prostatic cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers to affect older men and a major cause of dying. Consistent rectal exams are highly recommended to detect prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also a blood test that can measure the concentration of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which should normally be very low. Elevated pSA blood results might indicate a disease in the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or a cancerous prostate. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can lead your doctor to investigate further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or operations. It has only recently been noticed that medications such as Docetaxel can sometimes be useful in the treatment of cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate in men is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for health-related or primarily for sexual fulfillment.
