The prostate is a vital part of the sex organs of the male. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. The prostate gland's principle job is to first secrete and then store a clear fluid that is a vital component of seminal fluid. A non-diseased man's prostate gland is a little bit bigger in size than a walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra below the urinary bladder. It is positioned in front of the rectum and part of it can be felt during the course of the rectal examination.

Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is termed prostatitis. If the prostate grows enlarged it can occlude urine flow, making urination very painful and difficult and in very extreme instances entirely impossible. Prostatitis is treated with antibiotic medications, prostate massage or even surgical procedures.

In older-aged men, the prostate can grow to the point where urinating is difficult. This is termed benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly termed BPH. It can be treated with medicinal drugs or with surgical measures that removes a component of the prostate. One common surgical procedure used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most common cancers to strike elderly males and a major cause of death. Regular rectal exams are recommended to pick up prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also also a blood test that will measure the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which should normally be quite low. Raised test results could be an indicator of disorder inside the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can be grounds for your doctor to investigate more thoroughly. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or operations. It has just recently been found that medications such as Docetaxel can be effective in the treatment of a cancerous prostate.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in men is frequently compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for clinical value or strictly sexual fulfillment.
