The prostate is a gland that is a vital component of the masculine sex organs. It is mistakenly called the prostrate gland. The prostate gland's main function is to produce and store a see-through fluid that is an important part of semen (seminal fluid). A non-diseased human's prostate gland is a bit heftier in size than a shelled walnut. It surrounds the urethra just below the urinary bladder. It is positioned in front of the rectal area and part of it can be felt during the course of a rectal examination.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is called prostatitis. If the prostate grows too much in size it can hinder urine flow, making urination very painful and difficult and in extreme situations completely impassable. Prostatitis is commonly treated with antibiotic prescription drugs, prostate massage or surgery.

In older-aged males, the prostate can enlarge to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is called bPH/benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with medications or with surgery that removes part of the prostate. One commonplace operation used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Prostate cancer is one of the most frequent cancers affecting older-aged men and a leading cause of deaths. Consistent rectal exams are medically recommended to uncover prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also also a blood evaluation that will measure the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which should normally be quite low. Raised bloodwork PSA results may signal disease inside the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or a cancerous prostate. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be a reason for a physician to investigate even further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgery. It has just recently been observed that medications such as Docetaxel could be useful in the treatment of prostate cancer.

Stimulating the prostate in males is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate either for clinical or strictly for sexual purposes.
