The prostate is really a gland that is an important part of the sex organs of the male. It is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. The prostate gland's leading role is to first produce and then store a see-through liquid that is a vital part of semen. A sound human's prostate is a little bit bigger than a shelled walnut. It surrounds the urethra below the bladder. It is also located in front of the rectal area and part of it can be felt during the course of a rectal exam or evaluation.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is named prostatitis. If the prostate grows too large it can stop up the urine stream, making urination very painful and more difficult and in extreme instances totally impossible. Prostatitis can be treated with antibiotics, prostate massage or operations.

In elderly males, the prostate can grow to the point where urination becomes difficult. This is called benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly termed BPH. It can be treated with medication or with even surgical procedures that removes a portion of the prostate. One commonplace surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most frequent cancers to affect older-aged males and a major cause of death. Consistent rectal exams are highly recommended to pick up prostate cancer before it spreads. There can be also a blood test that will measure the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, very low. Elevated pSA blood results may signal disorder within the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can be a reason for your doctor to investigate more closely. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even surgical measures. It has only recently been noticed that medications including Docetaxel are useful in treating prostate cancer.

Stimulating the prostate gland in males is frequently compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for health-related or for strictly sexual purposes.
