The prostate is a gland that is a component of the male sexual organs. The prostate is mistakenly called the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate's most primary role is to produce and store a clear fluid that is part of seminal fluid. A healthy man's prostate gland is slightly larger in size than a walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra just below the bladder. It is situated in front of the rectal region and a portion of it can be felt during a rectal examination.

Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate gets too enlarged it can obstruct the flow of urine, making urination painful and difficult and in very severe situations wholly impassable. Prostatitis can often be treated with antibiotic medications, massage of the prostate or surgical procedures.

In older-aged men, the prostate may grow to the point where urination is difficult. This is commonly known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It can be treated with different types of medicines or with even surgical procedures that removes a component of the prostate. One common surgery used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most common cancers to strike older men and a leading cause of dying. Regular rectal exams are recommended to discover prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also also a laboratory blood evaluation that will measure the concentration of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, quite low. Raised bloodwork PSA results could signify disease in the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can cause a physician to investigate with further tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or surgical procedures. It has recently been observed that medications like Docetaxel can be useful in the treatment of prostate cancer.

Stimulating the prostate in men has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate either for clinical value or strictly for sexual fulfillment.
