The prostate is a vital part of the male sex organs. It is mistakenly called the prostrate, rather than prostate. Its primary function is to secrete and then store a see-through liquid that is an important part of semen, or seminal fluid. A non-diseased human's prostate is somewhat larger than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra underneath the bladder. It is also located in front of the rectum and a portion of it can be felt during the normal course of the rectal exam.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is termed prostatitis. If the prostate grows too much in size it can block the flow of urine, making urination painful and difficult and in severe instances totally impossible. Prostatitis can often be treated with antibiotic medications, prostate massage or operations.

In older men, the prostate can grow to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is named bPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with the use of medicinal drugs or with surgical procedures that removes a portion of the prostate. One commonplace operation used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most commonplace cancers to affect older-aged men and a leading cause of death. Regular rectal exams are medically recommended to detect prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also a lab blood test that measures the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which can be normally quite low. Elevated bloodwork PSA results may indicate a disease inside the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or prostate cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can be a reason for your doctor to investigate even further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or surgical measures. It has just recently been detected that drugs including Docetaxel could be helpful in the treatment of a cancerous prostate.

Stimulating the prostate gland in men is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for health-related or just for sexual purposes.
