The prostate is really a gland that is part of the male sexual organs. The prostate is mistakenly known as the prostrate. The prostate gland's most significant job is to first produce and then store a see-through liquid that is a component of semen. A non-diseased human prostate is a little bit bigger than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra beneath the urinary bladder. It is situated in front of the rectal region and a portion of it can be felt during the normal course of a rectal evaluation.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate grows too enlarged it can impede urine flow, making urination difficult and very painful and in extreme situations entirely impossible. Prostatitis is treated with antibiotic prescription drugs, massage of the prostate or even operations.

In men who are elderly, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urinating is difficult. This is referred to as benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly termed BPH. It can be treated with different types of medications or with surgery that removes a component of the prostate. One commonplace surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers that strikes older men and a major cause of death. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to uncover prostate cancer early. There is also also a blood test that will measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, quite low. Raised test results may indicate a disease within the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can be grounds for a doctor to investigate more. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgical procedures. It has only recently been noted that medications such as Docetaxel can sometimes be effective in treating a cancerous prostate.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in males is frequently compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate either for health-related or strictly sexual purposes.
