The prostate gland is a vital component of the masculine sex organs. It is mistakenly known as the prostrate. Its predominant job is to produce and store a see-through fluid that is part of seminal fluid or semen. A healthy individual's prostate is slightly larger than a shelled walnut. Inflammation in the prostate gland is referred to as prostatitis. Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers to affect older-aged males and a leading cause of deaths. Regular rectal exams are recommended to find prostate cancer early. There is also a lab blood test that can measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which can be normally very low. Elevated test results could be an indicator of disorder in the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can be a reason for your physician to investigate even further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgical procedures. It has just recently been discovered that medications including Docetaxel can sometimes be useful in the treatment of a cancerous prostate.
