The prostate gland is a component of the sex organs of the male. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. The prostate's principle job is to secrete and store a see-through liquid that is a vital component of seminal fluid. A healthy individual's prostate gland is a bit greater in size than a walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra beneath the urinary bladder. It is also positioned in front of the rectum and part of it can be felt during the course of a rectal evaluation.

Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is termed prostatitis. If the prostate grows enlarged it can hinder urine flow, making urination very painful and difficult and in very extreme cases entirely impassable. Prostatitis can usually be treated with antibiotic prescription medications, massage of the prostate or surgical measures.

In older-aged males, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is known as benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly termed BPH. It can be treated with the use of medicinal drugs or with surgical measures that removes a component of the prostate. One very typical operation used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Prostatic cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers to strike older-aged males and a leading cause of deaths. Consistent rectal exams are recommended to discover prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also a laboratory blood test that measures the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, quite low. Raised bloodwork PSA results could highly suggest disorder within the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can be grounds for a physician to investigate with further tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgical measures. It has only recently been found that medications such as Docetaxel are helpful in treating a cancerous prostate.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in males is frequently compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate either for health-related or strictly for sexual fulfillment.
