The prostate is an important part of the masculine sexual organs. It is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. The prostate gland's most paramount function is to secrete and then store a transparent liquid that is part of seminal fluid or semen. A normal man's prostate is a little bit bigger in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra underneath the urinary bladder. It is situated in front of the rectal area and a portion of it can be felt during the normal course of a rectal exam or evaluation.

Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is named prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged it can stop the flow of urine, making urination difficult and painful and in very severe situations totally impossible. Prostatitis can often be treated with antibiotic prescription medications, prostate massage or surgery.

In older men, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urinating is difficult. This is called bPH/benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with medication or with even surgical procedures that removes part of the prostate. One common operation used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most common cancers affecting elderly men and a major cause of death. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to uncover prostate cancer early. There is also also a laboratory blood test that will measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which should normally be very low. Raised test results might signify disorder in the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can cause a physician to investigate more thoroughly. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or surgery. It has just recently been noted that drugs including Docetaxel are effective in treating cancer.

Stimulating the prostate gland in males is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for clinical or just for sexual fulfillment.
