The prostate is a gland that is a vital part of the sex organs of the male. It is mistakenly called the prostrate, rather than prostate. Its predominant role is to produce and store a transparent fluid that is an important part of semen (seminal fluid). A sound human's prostate gland is slightly heftier in size than a shelled walnut. It surrounds the urethra just below the bladder. It is also located in front of the rectum and part of it can be felt while undergoing the rectal part of the exam.
Inflammation of the prostate gland is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate becomes too large it can occlude urine flow, making urination painful and difficult and in severe cases wholly impassable. Prostatitis can be treated with antibiotic prescription drugs, massage of the prostate or surgical procedures.
In elderly males, the prostate may grow to the point where urination becomes difficult. This is named bPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with different types of medications or with even operations that removes part of the prostate. One common surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).
Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most commonplace cancers that strikes older-aged males and a leading cause of death. Consistent rectal exams are recommended to pick up prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also also a laboratory blood evaluation that will measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, quite low. Elevated blood PSA results can suggest disease within the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or a cancerous prostate. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can be a reason for your doctor to investigate more closely. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even surgical measures. It has only recently been detected that drugs like Docetaxel could be helpful in treating a cancerous prostate.
Stimulating the prostate in men has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate either for clinical value or strictly for sexual purposes.
