The prostate is a gland that is part of the masculine sex organs. The prostate is mistakenly known as the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate gland's most significant function is to first secrete and then store a see-through liquid that is a component of semen, or seminal fluid. A normal human prostate is a bit larger than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra beneath the urinary bladder. In men who are elderly, the prostate can enlarge to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is termed benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly called BPH. It can be treated with the use of prescription medications or with operations that removes a portion of the prostate. One commonplace surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most common cancers to affect elderly men and a major cause of dying. Consistent rectal exams are highly recommended to discover prostate cancer early. There is also a blood evaluation that measures the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which should normally be very low. Raised bloodwork PSA results may indicate a disease inside the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can be grounds for your physician to investigate even further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or operations. It has just recently been found that medications like Docetaxel can be useful in the treatment of cancer.
