The prostate is a component of the male sex organs. The prostate is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. The prostate's main function is to first produce and then store a see-through liquid that is a vital part of seminal fluid (semen). A non-diseased individual's prostate gland is slightly bigger than a walnut. It surrounds the urethra just below the bladder. It is also positioned in front of the rectum and a portion of it can be felt while undergoing a rectal evaluation.
Inflammation in the prostate gland is called prostatitis. If the prostate grows too large it can block urine flow, making urination very painful and more difficult and in very severe cases entirely impossible. Prostatitis is commonly treated with antibiotics, massage of the prostate or surgical procedures.
In elderly males, the prostate can grow to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is called bPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with different types of medicines or with surgical measures that removes a portion of the prostate. One common surgery used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).
Prostatic cancer is one of the most frequent cancers that affects older men and a major cause of deaths. Consistent rectal exams are recommended to find prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also a lab blood test that measures the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, quite low. Raised blood PSA results could suggest disorder within the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or prostate cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can lead a physician to investigate with additional tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgical measures. It has recently been noticed that medicines such as Docetaxel may be helpful in treating cancer.
Stimulating the prostate gland in males has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for clinical or just for sexual purposes.
