The prostate is really a gland that is an important part of the male sex organs. It is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. There is also a blood test that will measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is also normally very low. Raised test results can signify disease within the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or a cancerous prostate. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can lead your physician to investigate more closely. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or surgical procedures. It has just recently been noted that drugs including Docetaxel may be useful in treating prostate cancer.
