The prostate is part of the masculine sexual organs. The prostate is mistakenly called the prostrate. The prostate's primary job is to secrete and then store a see-through fluid that is a vital component of semen, or seminal fluid. A sound human prostate gland is a little bit heftier in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra underneath the bladder. It is also located in front of the rectal region and a portion of it can be felt during a rectal exam.

Inflammation of the prostate is a gland that is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged it can hinder the flow of urine, making urination difficult and very painful and in very severe instances completely impossible. Prostatitis can be treated with antibiotic prescription medications, massage of the prostate or even surgical procedures.

In older males, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urination is difficult. This is known as bPH/benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with the use of medicinal drugs or with even operations that removes part of the prostate. One common surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Prostatic cancer is one of the most common cancers that affects older men and a leading cause of death. Consistent rectal exams are recommended to uncover prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also a blood evaluation that will measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which can be normally quite low. Elevated test results might be an indicator of disorder in the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or prostate cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can cause a doctor to investigate more thoroughly. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even surgery. It has only recently been observed that medications like Docetaxel are helpful in the treatment of a cancerous prostate.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in males is typically compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate either for clinical or just for sexual fulfillment.
