The prostate gland is a vital component of the masculine sex organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. The prostate gland's chief role is to produce and store a transparent liquid that is a component of semen (seminal fluid). A non-diseased individual's prostate gland is a bit larger than a walnut. In men who are older, the prostate can grow to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is named benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly termed BPH. It can be treated with prescription medications or with even surgery that removes a portion of the prostate. One very typical operation used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most frequent cancers that strikes older-aged men and a leading cause of deaths. Consistent rectal exams are medically recommended to discover prostate cancer early. There is also also a laboratory blood test that can measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, very low. Elevated pSA blood results may highly suggest disease in the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can be grounds for your doctor to investigate more. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or operations. It has just recently been detected that medicines including Docetaxel could be useful in treating prostate cancer.

Stimulating the prostate gland in men has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate either for health-related or strictly for sexual fulfillment.
