Welcome to this webpage about diagnosing prostrate trouble

The prostate is a gland that is a vital part of the male sexual organs. It is mistakenly called the prostrate. Its overriding function is to secrete and store a clear fluid that is a vital part of semen. A normal man's prostate is slightly larger in size than a walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra just below the bladder. It is situated in front of the rectal area and part of it can be felt during the normal course of the rectal examination.

Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is called prostatitis. If the prostate grows too enlarged it can jam up urine flow, making urination painful and difficult and in very extreme situations entirely impossible. Prostatitis can often be treated with antibiotic medications, massage of the prostate or surgery.

In elderly males, the prostate may grow to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is commonly known as benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. It can be treated with different types of medications or with surgery that removes a component of the prostate. One commonplace surgical procedure used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most commonplace cancers affecting elderly males and a major cause of dying. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to pick up prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also a laboratory blood evaluation that measures the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which should normally be very low. Raised bloodwork PSA results could signal disorder within the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be a reason for a physician to investigate with further tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgical measures. It has recently been detected that drugs such as Docetaxel can sometimes be effective in treating cancer.

Stimulating the prostate in males is frequently compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for medical value or primarily for sexual purposes.
