The prostate is a gland that is a component of the masculine sexual organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly called the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate gland's main role is to secrete and store a see-through fluid that is a vital component of seminal fluid or semen. A non-diseased individual's prostate is a little bit bigger in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra below the urinary bladder. It is situated in front of the rectal area and a portion of it can be felt while undergoing the rectal exam.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is known as prostatitis. If the prostate grows too much in size it can block the flow of urine, making urination difficult and very painful and in extreme instances totally impossible. Prostatitis can often be treated with antibiotic drugs, massage of the prostate or operations.

In men who are older, the prostate can enlarge to the point where urination becomes difficult. This is known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It can be treated with the use of medicines or with surgical procedures that removes part of the prostate. One very typical surgery used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most commonplace cancers to affect older-aged males and a leading cause of dying. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to find prostate cancer early. There is also also a blood evaluation that can measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, quite low. Elevated blood PSA results might signify disorder inside the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or prostate cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can be grounds for your doctor to investigate even further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgical procedures. It has just recently been discovered that medicines like Docetaxel could be helpful in the treatment of cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in males has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate either for medical value or for strictly sexual purposes.
