The prostate gland is a vital part of the masculine sex organs. It is mistakenly called the prostrate, rather than prostate. Its principle job is to first secrete and then store a clear fluid that is an important part of semen, or seminal fluid. A sound human prostate gland is a bit greater in size than a shelled walnut. It surrounds the urethra beneath the urinary bladder. It is located in front of the rectum and part of it can be felt during the rectal part of the exam.

Inflammation of the prostate is a gland that is called prostatitis. If the prostate gets too enlarged it can jam up the urine stream, making urination very painful and more difficult and in severe situations completely impossible. Prostatitis is treated with antibiotics, massage of the prostate or surgical procedures.

In older men, the prostate can grow to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is termed benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly called BPH. It can be treated with the use of prescription medications or with operations that removes a portion of the prostate. One common surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most common cancers affecting older men and a major cause of death. Regular rectal exams are medically recommended to pick up prostate cancer in the early stages. There can be also a lab blood test that measures the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which should normally be quite low. Elevated blood PSA results may highly suggest disorder within the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can cause your doctor to investigate more thoroughly. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgery. It has recently been noted that drugs such as Docetaxel are useful in treating a cancerous prostate.

Stimulation of the prostate in men is frequently compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate either for clinical or for strictly sexual fulfillment.
