The prostate is part of the male sexual organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. Its most primary function is to produce and store a transparent liquid that is part of semen (seminal fluid). A normal human's prostate is slightly heftier in size than a shelled walnut. It surrounds the urethra underneath the urinary bladder. It is also located in front of the rectum and a portion of it can be felt during the normal course of a rectal evaluation.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is termed prostatitis. If the prostate grows too large it can occlude urine flow, making urination very painful and difficult and in very extreme situations wholly impassable. Prostatitis can be treated with antibiotic prescription drugs, prostate massage or surgical measures.

In older-aged males, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urination is difficult. This is commonly known as bPH/benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with different types of medication or with surgery that removes a component of the prostate. One common surgery used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most frequent cancers that strikes elderly males and a leading cause of dying. Consistent rectal exams are highly recommended to uncover prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also a blood test that measures the concentration of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is also normally very low. Raised test results can be an indicator of disease inside the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can lead a physician to investigate with additional tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or operations. It has only recently been noticed that medicines including Docetaxel may be useful in treating prostate cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in males is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for health-related or primarily for sexual purposes.
