The prostate is a gland that is part of the male sexual organs. It is mistakenly known as the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate's primary role is to secrete and then store a see-through fluid that is part of semen. A healthy individual's prostate is slightly larger in size than a walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra beneath the urinary bladder. It is also positioned in front of the rectal area and part of it can be felt during the normal course of a rectal examination.

Inflammation of the prostate is a gland that is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate grows enlarged it can hinder urine flow, making urination very painful and difficult and in very extreme instances wholly impossible. Prostatitis is treated with antibiotic prescription drugs, prostate massage or surgery.

In men who are elderly, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is named benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. It can be treated with the use of medication or with even operations that removes part of the prostate. One commonplace operation used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Prostatic cancer is one of the most common cancers that affects older-aged males and a leading cause of death. Consistent rectal exams are recommended to uncover prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also a laboratory blood evaluation that will measure the concentration of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, very low. Raised test results can suggest disease in the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be a reason for a physician to investigate more closely. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgery. It has recently been found that medications including Docetaxel are helpful in treating cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in men is typically compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for clinical or just for sexual purposes.
