The prostate is a gland that is a vital component of the masculine sexual organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. The prostate gland's chief role is to first secrete and then store a transparent fluid that is a vital part of semen, or seminal fluid. A normal man's prostate is somewhat larger than a walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra just below the urinary bladder. It is also situated in front of the rectal region and part of it can be felt during the normal course of a rectal exam.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is called prostatitis. If the prostate becomes too large it can stop up the flow of urine, making urination very painful and more difficult and in extreme cases totally impossible. Prostatitis is commonly treated with antibiotics, massage of the prostate or operations.

In elderly males, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is named bPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with the use of prescription medications or with surgical procedures that removes a portion of the prostate. One commonplace surgical procedure used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most frequent cancers to affect elderly men and a leading cause of dying. Consistent rectal exams are medically recommended to find prostate cancer early. There can be also a blood test that can measure the concentration of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which should normally be quite low. Elevated bloodwork PSA results can signal disease within the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or a cancerous prostate. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can cause a doctor to investigate with additional tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or operations. It has recently been observed that medications such as Docetaxel could be useful in the treatment of prostate cancer.

Stimulating the prostate gland in men is typically compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for clinical or just for sexual fulfillment.
