The prostate is really a gland that is a vital part of the masculine sexual organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly called the prostrate gland. Its most primary role is to first secrete and then store a see-through liquid that is an important part of seminal fluid or semen. A normal human prostate is a little bit larger in size than a shelled walnut. It surrounds the urethra just below the bladder. It is also positioned in front of the rectal region and part of it can be felt while undergoing the rectal exam.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is called prostatitis. If the prostate grows too much in size it can impede the urine stream, making urination very painful and more difficult and in very extreme instances completely impossible. Prostatitis is treated with antibiotic medications, prostate massage or even surgical procedures.

In men who are older, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is named bPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with the use of medication or with surgery that removes part of the prostate. One common operation used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Prostatic cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers that affects older males and a leading cause of dying. Regular rectal exams are recommended to find prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also also a blood test that will measure the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, quite low. Elevated bloodwork PSA results can suggest disease inside the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can cause a doctor to investigate with further tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgery. It has recently been found that drugs such as Docetaxel are helpful in treating prostate cancer.

Stimulating the prostate in males has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate either for health-related or strictly sexual fulfillment.
