The prostate is really a gland that is a component of the male sex organs. The prostate is mistakenly called the prostrate. The prostate gland's main function is to secrete and store a clear liquid that is part of semen. A sound man's prostate gland is somewhat heftier in size than a shelled walnut. One common surgical procedure used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Prostatic cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers that affects elderly men and a leading cause of dying. Consistent rectal exams are medically recommended to detect prostate cancer early. There is also a laboratory blood evaluation that can measure the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which can be normally very low. Elevated blood PSA results could be an indicator of disorder in the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or a cancerous prostate. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can be grounds for your doctor to investigate more. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or operations. It has recently been detected that medications such as Docetaxel may be effective in treating cancer.
