The prostate gland is a vital component of the masculine sex organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate, rather than prostate. Its primary job is to first produce and then store a transparent liquid that is a component of semen, or seminal fluid. A non-diseased human's prostate gland is slightly greater in size than a shelled walnut. It surrounds the urethra below the bladder. It is located in front of the rectum and part of it can be felt during a rectal examination.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate grows enlarged it can hinder urine flow, making urination difficult and painful and in severe instances entirely impassable. Prostatitis can usually be treated with antibiotic medications, massage of the prostate or surgical procedures.

In older-aged males, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urinating is difficult. This is termed benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly termed BPH. It can be treated with the use of prescription medications or with even operations that removes a portion of the prostate. One commonplace operation used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most frequent cancers affecting older-aged men and a major cause of deaths. Consistent rectal exams are recommended to discover prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also a lab blood test that will measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which should normally be quite low. Raised pSA blood results may signify disorder inside the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or prostate cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can lead your physician to investigate more thoroughly. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgical procedures. It has only recently been observed that drugs such as Docetaxel can be helpful in treating a cancerous prostate.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in males has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for clinical value or primarily for sexual fulfillment.
