The prostate is really a gland that is part of the masculine sexual organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly called the prostrate. Its leading function is to secrete and then store a transparent liquid that is a vital component of seminal fluid (semen). A healthy human prostate gland is slightly greater in size than a walnut. It surrounds the urethra below the urinary bladder. It is also situated in front of the rectal region and a portion of it can be felt while undergoing a rectal exam.
Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is named prostatitis. If the prostate becomes too large it can stop the urine stream, making urination difficult and very painful and in severe situations entirely impossible. Prostatitis is commonly treated with antibiotic prescription drugs, prostate massage or surgery.
In men who are elderly, the prostate may grow to the point where urination becomes difficult. This is named benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly termed BPH. It can be treated with medication or with surgical procedures that removes a portion of the prostate. One common surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).
Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most frequent cancers to affect older-aged males and a major cause of death. Consistent rectal exams are medically recommended to pick up prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also a laboratory blood test that measures the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, very low. Elevated bloodwork PSA results can indicate a disease within the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can cause your physician to investigate with additional tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even surgery. It has just recently been noticed that medications including Docetaxel are effective in the treatment of prostate cancer.
Stimulating the prostate in men is frequently compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for health-related or strictly for sexual fulfillment.
