The prostate is a gland that is a vital component of the sex organs of the male. It is mistakenly known as the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate's most primary role is to first produce and then store a see-through fluid that is part of semen. A non-diseased human's prostate is a bit bigger in size than a walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra underneath the bladder. It is located in front of the rectal area and part of it can be felt during the normal course of the rectal examination.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is known as prostatitis. If the prostate grows too enlarged it can impede the flow of urine, making urination very painful and difficult and in very severe cases completely impassable. Prostatitis is commonly treated with antibiotic prescription drugs, massage of the prostate or surgical measures.

In older males, the prostate may grow to the point where urination is difficult. This is called bPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with the use of medication or with even surgery that removes a component of the prostate. One commonplace surgical procedure used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Prostatic cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers that affects older men and a leading cause of dying. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to detect prostate cancer early. There is also a laboratory blood test that can measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is also normally quite low. Raised pSA blood results may suggest disorder inside the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can lead a doctor to investigate even further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or surgical procedures. It has recently been discovered that medicines such as Docetaxel could be helpful in the treatment of cancer.

Stimulating the prostate gland in males has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for clinical value or just for sexual purposes.
