The prostate is a component of the male sex organs. The prostate is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. The prostate gland's most paramount job is to secrete and store a clear fluid that is a vital part of seminal fluid. Cancer of the prostate is one of the most common cancers affecting elderly men and a major cause of deaths. Consistent rectal exams are recommended to pick up prostate cancer before it spreads. There can be also a blood evaluation that will measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which should normally be very low. Elevated bloodwork PSA results could highly suggest disorder within the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or a cancerous prostate. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be a reason for your physician to investigate further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even operations. It has only recently been uncovered that drugs including Docetaxel may be useful in treating a cancerous prostate.
