Welcome to our site about emory hospital and prostate cancer

The prostate is a gland that is part of the male sexual organs. It is mistakenly known as the prostrate, rather than prostate. Its most important job is to produce and store a clear fluid that is a component of semen, or seminal fluid. A non-diseased individual's prostate is slightly larger than a walnut. It surrounds the urethra just below the bladder. It is situated in front of the rectal area and part of it can be felt during the course of a rectal examination.

Inflammation of the prostate is a gland that is termed prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged too much it can stop up the urine stream, making urination very painful and more difficult and in extreme instances wholly impossible. Prostatitis can be treated with antibiotics, massage of the prostate or surgical measures.

In men who are elderly, the prostate can grow to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is commonly known as benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. It can be treated with the use of prescription medications or with even surgical procedures that removes a portion of the prostate. One common surgery used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Prostate cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers to strike older males and a leading cause of dying. Consistent rectal exams are medically recommended to find prostate cancer early. There is also a lab blood test that measures the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, very low. Elevated pSA blood results might signal disease within the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be grounds for a doctor to investigate even further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or operations. It has only recently been discovered that medicines such as Docetaxel are helpful in the treatment of cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in men is typically compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for health-related or just for sexual purposes.
