The prostate gland is an important part of the male sex organs. It is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. One very typical operation used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most commonplace cancers affecting elderly men and a leading cause of death. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to find prostate cancer before it spreads. There can be also a blood evaluation that can measure the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which should normally be quite low. Elevated bloodwork PSA results could signal disease in the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or a cancerous prostate. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can cause a doctor to investigate more. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgical procedures. It has recently been detected that medications like Docetaxel can be helpful in treating prostate cancer.
