The prostate is a gland that is part of the masculine sexual organs. The prostate is mistakenly known as the prostrate. The prostate gland's principle function is to first secrete and then store a transparent fluid that is an important part of seminal fluid. Inflammation of the prostate is a gland that is named prostatitis. If the prostate grows too enlarged it can hinder the flow of urine, making urination difficult and very painful and in very extreme instances completely impassable. Prostatitis is commonly treated with antibiotic medications, massage of the prostate or operations.

In older-aged men, the prostate can enlarge to the point where urination is difficult. This is known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It can be treated with different types of medication or with surgical procedures that removes a portion of the prostate. One commonplace surgery used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most frequent cancers to affect elderly men and a leading cause of dying. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to detect prostate cancer early. There is also a lab blood test that will measure the concentration of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which should normally be very low. Elevated pSA blood results can signify disorder inside the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or prostate cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can lead a physician to investigate further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or surgical measures. It has just recently been uncovered that medicines like Docetaxel are helpful in the treatment of prostate cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in men has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for health-related or for strictly sexual purposes.
