The prostate gland is part of the masculine sexual organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate's chief role is to secrete and store a see-through fluid that is a vital component of seminal fluid or semen. A healthy man's prostate is a bit larger than a walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra just below the bladder. It is positioned in front of the rectal area and part of it can be felt during the course of a rectal examination.
Inflammation of the prostate is a gland that is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate gets too enlarged it can jam up the urine stream, making urination very painful and more difficult and in very severe situations wholly impassable. Prostatitis can usually be treated with antibiotic medications, prostate massage or surgery.
In elderly males, the prostate may grow to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is named benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly called BPH. It can be treated with medications or with operations that removes part of the prostate. One very typical surgical procedure used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).
Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most common cancers to affect older males and a leading cause of death. Consistent rectal exams are recommended to find prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also a lab blood test that can measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which can be normally very low. Raised test results could indicate a disease in the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be grounds for your doctor to investigate even further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or surgical procedures. It has only recently been uncovered that drugs like Docetaxel can be useful in the treatment of a cancerous prostate.
Stimulating the prostate in men is frequently compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate either for clinical or primarily for sexual purposes.
