The prostate is part of the male sexual organs. The prostate is mistakenly known as the prostrate, rather than prostate. Its paramount role is to first produce and then store a transparent fluid that is a vital component of semen, or seminal fluid. A sound man's prostate gland is slightly heftier in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra just below the urinary bladder. It is also situated in front of the rectal region and part of it can be felt during the rectal part of the exam.

Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is named prostatitis. If the prostate grows enlarged it can occlude urine flow, making urination very painful and more difficult and in severe cases wholly impossible. Prostatitis is treated with antibiotic drugs, massage of the prostate or surgical procedures.

In men who are elderly, the prostate may grow to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is named bPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with different types of medication or with even surgery that removes part of the prostate. One commonplace operation used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Prostatic cancer is one of the most frequent cancers that strikes older males and a leading cause of death. Consistent rectal exams are highly recommended to find prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also a laboratory blood evaluation that can measure the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, quite low. Raised test results might indicate a disorder in the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be grounds for your physician to investigate more thoroughly. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgical measures. It has only recently been noticed that drugs like Docetaxel can sometimes be helpful in treating cancer.

Stimulating the prostate in men has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for clinical or strictly for sexual fulfillment.
