The prostate is a vital part of the sex organs of the male. It is mistakenly called the prostrate gland. The prostate gland's chief role is to secrete and store a see-through fluid that is part of seminal fluid or semen. A sound individual's prostate gland is a bit larger in size than a shelled walnut. It surrounds the urethra underneath the urinary bladder. It is situated in front of the rectal region and part of it can be felt during the normal course of a rectal exam or evaluation.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is called prostatitis. In older men, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urination is difficult. This is commonly known as benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly termed BPH. It can be treated with the use of medication or with even surgical procedures that removes a component of the prostate. One common surgery used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers to strike older men and a leading cause of deaths. Regular rectal exams are recommended to uncover prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also a laboratory blood test that will measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is normally quite low. Elevated blood PSA results could be an indicator of disease inside the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can be grounds for your physician to investigate more thoroughly. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or surgery. It has only recently been discovered that drugs including Docetaxel can sometimes be useful in treating prostate cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in males is typically compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for clinical value or strictly for sexual fulfillment.
