The prostate is a gland that is a component of the masculine sex organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. The prostate's most paramount function is to secrete and then store a transparent liquid that is a vital part of seminal fluid (semen). A normal man's prostate is slightly greater in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra just below the urinary bladder. There is also also a laboratory blood evaluation that can measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which should normally be very low. Raised bloodwork PSA results might suggest disease within the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be a reason for a doctor to investigate with additional tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or surgical procedures. It has just recently been noticed that medicines such as Docetaxel may be effective in the treatment of cancer.
